• Ringtail possums weigh between 600–1,000 g, live in family groups of up to six and favour dense canopy cover and roof cavities.
• Brushtail possums can weigh up to 4 kg, are more solitary and readily exploit roof voids, pergolas and even garden sheds.

Both species are nocturnal. They emerge at dusk to forage on leaves, flowers, food, fruit and garden ornamentals, then retreat to their nesting site by dawn. Brighton’s gardens—with fruit trees, flowering shrubs and native eucalypts—offer abundant resources, while the architectural features of older homes provide countless entry points via roof tiles, chimney gaps, and decorative vents.

Possums can breed almost year-round in Victoria’s mild climate. A single breeding pair, left unchecked, can expand to a small colony within 12–18 months. Young possums disperse in search of new habitat, sometimes choosing neighbouring rooftops. Early inspection and control help prevent escalating infestation and repeated incursions.

• Incomplete exclusion: Possums find alternate entry points when only obvious gaps are sealed.
• Unsafe methods: Spring traps can injure non-target wildlife, pets or native animals.
• Legal risk: In Victoria, possums are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. Relocating or harming them without a permit can lead to fines.
